Roadtrip across Croatia

Would definitely recommend driving across the coastline of Croatia

Journey route

Zagreb- Plitvice-Split-Hvar-Dubrovnik-Mijet

Map placeholder — a simplified route will live here later.

Croatia was something that we discovered while I & my husband wanted to do an european tour but not a typical one, and, we decided to do it right—a road trip across the country. From Zagreb to Plitvice, Split, Hvar, Dubrovnik, and even the hidden gem of Mljet, it was everything we hoped for and more.

Day 1 – Zagreb

We landed in Zagreb and spent the day just wandering around. The city has a laid-back vibe, perfect for easing into the trip.

Day 2 – Plitvice National Park

We hit the road early, stopping at Rastoke—a tiny fairytale village with waterfalls and colorful autumn trees. Then came Plitvice, and wow… it’s honestly one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. October made it extra special: fiery orange and yellow leaves, crystal-clear lakes in shades of blue, and waterfalls everywhere. We hiked all day and crashed at an Airbnb nearby.

Day 3 – Split

The drive to Split was stunning—coastal cliffs, little towns, and endless sea views. Split itself feels like stepping back in time, with stone streets and centuries of history. Definitely do a walking tour here; plus, Game of Thrones fans will geek out at the filming spots.

Day 4 – Hvar Island

Ferry time! Hvar was all about Mediterranean food, slow walks, and evenings with pizza and wine by the water. Pure island bliss.

Day 5 – Blue Cave Expedition

The caves were closed due to weather, but the boat trip was still epic. We swam, hopped between islands, and ended the day with one of the most colorful sunsets I’ve ever seen.

Day 6 – Drive to Dubrovnik

We chose the coastal route, and it was jaw-dropping—blue waters stretching forever, sea and sky melting together. By the time we reached Dubrovnik, we were exhausted but so happy.

Day 7 – Dubrovnik Old Town

We stayed inside the walled city (yes, King’s Landing for GOT fans!). We explored the lanes, ate burek and ice cream, and watched waves crash against the cliffs. One rainy morning, we sat at a café overlooking the sea with coffee and croissants—it was simple, but one of the best moments of the trip.

Day 8 – Mljet Island

Mljet is a hidden treasure. 80% of the island is national park, and in October it felt like we had it all to ourselves. Quiet, peaceful, and sunsets that made us stop in our tracks.

Day 9 – Mljet National Park

We hiked, picked pinecones and olives, and even found some questionable mushrooms. Back at our Airbnb, we cooked pasta with the olives we’d plucked ourselves. It doesn’t get more local than that.

Day 10 – Back to Dubrovnik

Travel isn’t complete without a little drama—our ferry got canceled due to weather. With a flight the next day, we panicked a bit, but the locals were amazing. They helped us figure out another (longer) route, and though we paid extra, it was way better than missing our flight.

Croatia is a dream—medieval towns, gorgeous islands, national parks, and cozy villages. It’s got the perfect mix of history, nature, and adventure. If you’re planning a trip, I’d say go for the road trip route. You’ll see so much more, and the unexpected moments will be the ones you remember forever.
